Lying west of San Diego Bay and north and east of the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma real estate is practically surrounded by water. Point Loma isn’t just an ordinary waterfront community it’s a richly historic one.
The peninsula’s eastern area is widely acknowledged to be the spot where Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo first landed in 1542. He and his crew were the first Europeans to ever see and set foot on the region that would be the U.S.’ West Coast. Thus, Point Loma has a history that dates back more than 400 years, one that predates the forming of the country and of the state.
There are quite a few historic sites and landmarks throughout the neighborhood. The most notable is the Cabrillo National Monument, which commemorates the explorer’s historic landing on Point Loma and San Diego Bay. In addition to a 14-foot statue of Cabrillo, the monument also features a museum, an abundance of preserved wildlife habitats, and the iconic Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The lighthouse has often been used as a symbol for the city as a whole for more than a hundred years.
